Community Allotment Project at The Hub South Shore

In 2024, we proudly secured our Community Allotment—a vibrant 234-square-meter space where local residents can come together to grow fresh fruit and vegetables with the support and guidance of our knowledgeable volunteers. This initiative offers a hands-on opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to connect with nature, learn valuable gardening skills, and enjoy the many benefits of growing their own food.

This beautiful artists impression from our Art Group encapsulated the essence of what we would like to achieve in our Community Allotment.

Our Vision for the Allotment

Currently a blank canvas, our allotment is set to become a fully-equipped, inclusive space designed to meet the needs of our entire community. Planned features include:

  • Outdoor Seating Area: A peaceful spot for enjoying a cup of tea, socializing, and soaking in the tranquil surroundings.

  • Storage Shed: For rainy days

  • New fencing: To replace old and worn fencing to secure the allotment.

  • Greenhouse and Garden Shed: Essential structures for nurturing plants year-round and securely storing tools and supplies.

  • Wheelchair-Accessible Raised Beds: These raised beds will ensure that everyone, including those with limited mobility, can actively participate in gardening.

  • Compost Area: To promote sustainability, we’ll create a compost area that will provide high-quality, nutrient-rich soil for our plants.

  • Home Grown Produce: Encouraging our people to grow their own food and to grow fruits and vegetables to supply our community kitchen with meals for our growing community.

  • Gardening Groups: Fostering relationships between old and young, passing on knowledge to the younger generations, sharing tips.

Mentorship and Community Building

Our Community Allotment will be more than just a place to grow produce—it’s an intergenerational hub where experienced gardeners can share their knowledge and passion. Skilled gardeners, who may face physical limitations, can mentor younger participants, helping to cultivate a love for gardening and passing down a legacy of knowledge within our community. Through this mentorship, we aim to create lasting connections, foster a sense of belonging, and support the well-being of everyone involved.
